Traditionally these pewter tankards are made with glass bottoms. The legend says that this was to allow the drinker in the 18th Century to see if a shilling had been dropped into your ale by the Recruiting Seargent. Supping the ale would be deemed as 'taking the King's Shilling' and thus fair game for hauling off to His Majesty's Army or Navy. In these quieter times you can see right through the glass to spot who's buying the next round!
